DAY 7: THE SORROW OF ADDICTION, DESTRUCTIVE HABITS AND FAMILY PAIN
Our Lady of Sorrows, I come before you today carrying the pain of addiction, destructive habits, and the wounds they have caused in my life and family. You know the habits I have struggled to break, the promises I have made and failed to keep, the moments when I have wanted to change but found myself returning to the same patterns, and the shame that follows when I realize how much damage these struggles have caused. You also know the pain of watching someone I love destroy their life through addiction, anger, gambling, alcohol, drugs, pornography, destructive relationships, or other habits that have brought conflict and suffering into the family. Mother of Sorrows, take this wounded situation to Jesus, ask Him to give me freedom, courage, self control, healing, and the grace to seek the right help, so that what has become a source of sorrow may become a place where God's mercy and restoration are experienced. Amen.
“So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.” — John 8:36
Addiction can slowly take control of a person's life while causing pain far beyond the person struggling with it. A habit that may have begun as curiosity, pleasure, escape, or an attempt to cope with pain can eventually affect finances, relationships, work, health, responsibilities, and faith. A person may sincerely desire to stop but find themselves returning to the same behavior again and again, followed by guilt, secrecy, shame, and another promise to change. Families can also suffer deeply when a loved one's addiction brings arguments, broken trust, financial losses, neglect, violence, betrayal, or constant uncertainty into the home. Sometimes the person struggling is crying inside while everyone around them only sees the behavior and the damage it has caused.
Mary understands the sorrow of watching someone she loves suffer. She stood beside Jesus through His suffering even though she could not remove His Cross. Today, she teaches me not to surrender to hopelessness when destructive patterns seem stronger than my ability to overcome them. God's grace does not call me to pretend that the problem does not exist; it calls me into truth, repentance, courage, and the willingness to seek help. If I am struggling personally, I must bring the truth into the light and take responsible steps toward freedom. If someone I love is struggling, I can pray for them, establish healthy boundaries, encourage them toward appropriate help, and refuse to believe that their present condition is the final chapter of their life.
Our Lady of Sorrows, I bring before you the struggle that has become a source of sorrow in my life. You know the habit I have tried to overcome and the times I have promised myself that I would never return to it, only to find myself trapped again. You know the moments when I feel ashamed of myself, disappointed by my weakness, and afraid that I will never truly change. I do not want this struggle to control my thoughts, decisions, relationships, finances, or future. Mother, take me to Jesus and help me stop hiding from the truth, so that I may receive the grace and courage necessary to begin walking toward genuine freedom.
[MENTION YOUR PERSONAL PETITIONS AND THE ADDICTIONS, HABITS, OR FAMILY STRUGGLES YOU ARE BRINGING BEFORE GOD HERE]
Lord Jesus, I ask You to break the power that destructive habits have gained over my life. Give me the grace to resist temptation when it comes and the wisdom to recognize the situations, places, emotions, and influences that lead me back into the same patterns. Help me remove what I need to remove from my life and establish healthier habits that lead me toward freedom. Give me humility to seek appropriate professional, pastoral, medical, or community support when I need it, because I do not want pride or shame to keep me trapped. When I fall, do not allow me to surrender to despair; give me the courage to rise, repent, seek help, and begin again.
Lord Jesus, I also place before You the family pain connected to this struggle. You know the arguments, broken trust, financial problems, disappointments, secrets, anger, neglect, and wounds that have entered my home because of destructive behavior. If I have hurt others through my actions, give me the humility to acknowledge the harm I have caused and the courage to make amends where possible. If someone I love is trapped in addiction or destructive habits, give me wisdom about how to support them without enabling what is destroying them. Protect my family from further harm and lead us toward healing, truth, forgiveness, healthy boundaries, and genuine restoration.
Our Lady of Sorrows, stay beside me when temptation becomes strong and when the desire to escape my pain becomes greater than my desire to change. Help me understand that freedom is worth fighting for and that I do not have to remain imprisoned by something that has controlled me for years. When shame tells me that I am beyond repair, lead me to the mercy of Jesus. When I feel discouraged by repeated failures, remind me that I can take the next faithful step. May Christ heal the wounds beneath my destructive habits, restore what has been damaged, and teach me to live with greater freedom, responsibility, dignity, and peace. Amen.
My God, I offer You this Rosary for Your glory, so that I may honor Your Holy Mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and meditate upon her suffering in union with Jesus Christ. I humbly beg You to give me true repentance for all my sins. Give me wisdom and humility, so that I may receive the graces and indulgences associated with this prayer. Through the intercession of Our Lady of Sorrows, help me place before You my struggles with addiction, destructive habits, family wounds, repeated failures, and every pain that these situations have caused. Give me courage to face the truth, humility to seek help, strength to change what I can change, and wisdom to place every situation into the hands of Jesus. Amen.
O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended You, and I detest all my sins because I dread the loss of Heaven and the pains of hell; but most of all because they offend You, my God, You Who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen.
Pray 3 Hail Mary.
Most Merciful Mother, remind us always about the Sorrows of your Son, Jesus.
Scripture: Luke 2:22–35
Simeon told Mary that a sword would pierce her heart because of the suffering that would come through Jesus. Mary received this painful prophecy knowing that her journey with Jesus would include suffering she could not prevent. She continued faithfully even without knowing how deep the sorrow would become.
Prayer:
Our Lady of Sorrows, I bring before you the fear I have about my own struggle. Sometimes I wonder whether I will ever truly be free from the habit that has become part of my life. I fear what may happen if I do not change and I fear losing the people I love because of my actions. When I become afraid of my future, help me face the truth with courage and place my weakness before Jesus rather than hiding it.
Pray 1 Our Father and 7 Hail Mary.
Most Merciful Mother, remind us always about the Sorrows of your Son, Jesus.
Scripture: Matthew 2:13–15
Mary and Joseph had to flee into Egypt to protect Jesus from danger. They had to leave behind what was familiar and enter an uncertain situation. Their journey reminds me that sometimes I must make difficult changes to protect my life and the people entrusted to me.
Prayer:
Mother of Sorrows, help me have the courage to leave behind whatever continually leads me into destructive behavior. Give me strength to distance myself from unhealthy influences, places, relationships, conversations, and situations that repeatedly pull me back into temptation. If I need to change my environment, routines, friendships, or habits, give me wisdom to make those changes. Lead me toward people and places that encourage me to become the person God is calling me to be.
Pray 1 Our Father and 7 Hail Mary.
Most Merciful Mother, remind us always about the Sorrows of your Son, Jesus.
Scripture: Luke 2:41–52
Mary and Joseph experienced deep anguish when they realized that Jesus was no longer with them. They searched for Him until they found Him in the Temple. Their sorrow reminds me of what it feels like to realize that something precious has been lost through choices, circumstances, or destructive patterns.
Prayer:
Our Lady of Sorrows, I bring you the parts of my life that I feel I have lost because of destructive habits. I may have lost trust, money, opportunities, friendships, peace, confidence, time, or closeness with people I love. I may look back and wish I could undo certain choices, but I cannot change the past. Help me stop living only in regret and begin taking responsibility for the present. Lead me back to Jesus and help me rebuild, step by step, what can still be restored.
Pray 1 Our Father and 7 Hail Mary.
Most Merciful Mother, remind us always about the Sorrows of your Son, Jesus.
Scripture: Luke 23:27–31
Mary met Jesus while He was carrying His Cross toward Calvary. She could not remove His suffering, but she remained near Him. Her presence reminds me that I must not abandon someone simply because their struggle is painful, while also recognizing that love sometimes requires truth, boundaries, and difficult decisions.
Prayer:
Mother of Sorrows, I bring before you the people whose struggles have become a source of pain in my family. If I am suffering because someone I love is addicted or trapped in destructive behavior, give me wisdom to know how to help without enabling what is destroying them. If I am the one causing pain, give me humility to stop making excuses and accept responsibility for my actions. Help me love with truth, speak with courage, establish healthy boundaries when necessary, and seek genuine restoration rather than simply covering up the problem.
Pray 1 Our Father and 7 Hail Mary.
Most Merciful Mother, remind us always about the Sorrows of your Son, Jesus.
Scripture: John 19:25–27
Mary stood at the foot of the Cross while Jesus suffered. She remained present through the darkest moment, refusing to abandon Him. Her faithfulness reminds me that even in the darkest season of my struggle, I can turn toward Christ rather than running deeper into destructive behavior.
Prayer:
Our Sorrowful Mother, stand beside me at the place where my struggle hurts the most. When temptation becomes strong, help me turn toward Jesus instead of returning to the habit that has wounded me. When I feel ashamed of what I have done, lead me toward repentance rather than hiding. When I feel that I have failed too many times, remind me that God's mercy is greater than my failure. Give me courage to remain with Christ even when changing my life becomes difficult.
Pray 1 Our Father and 7 Hail Mary.
Most Merciful Mother, remind us always about the Sorrows of your Son, Jesus.
Scripture: John 19:38–40
Mary received the dead body of Jesus after His death on the Cross. The sorrow was deep, and the situation appeared beyond human repair. Yet God was not finished, even when everything seemed lost.
Prayer:
Mother of Sorrows, I bring before you the damage that destructive habits have caused in my life. Some parts of me feel exhausted, wounded, ashamed, and broken because of choices I have made repeatedly. I may have damaged relationships, wasted resources, lost opportunities, or wounded people who trusted me. Ask Jesus to give me the grace not only to feel sorry but also to change. Help me rebuild my life patiently and accept that healing may require time, discipline, accountability, forgiveness, and consistent effort.
Pray 1 Our Father and 7 Hail Mary.
Most Merciful Mother, remind us always about the Sorrows of your Son, Jesus.
Scripture: John 19:41–42
Jesus was placed in the tomb, and everything appeared finished. There was silence before the Resurrection, and nobody could yet see the victory that God was preparing. This mystery reminds me that even after seasons of destruction, God can still bring new life.
Prayer:
Our Lady of Sorrows, I bring you the part of my life that feels buried beneath years of destructive habits. I may have tried to change before and failed, and because of those failures I may believe that freedom is no longer possible for me. Help me not to accept bondage as my permanent identity. Lead me to Jesus, give me the courage to seek the help I need, and strengthen me to take one faithful step after another. May what has been wounded in my life become a place where the mercy of Christ brings new life.
Pray 1 Our Father and 7 Hail Mary.
Most Merciful Mother, remind us always about the Sorrows of your Son, Jesus.
Lord Jesus, I place before You the destructive habit that I have struggled to overcome and every wound that surrounds it. You know what triggers me, what I hide from others, the promises I have broken, and the shame I carry afterward. I ask You to give me genuine freedom and the courage to take practical steps toward healing, including seeking appropriate help when I need it. Heal the pain that I have tried to escape through destructive behavior, strengthen my self control, and help me replace unhealthy patterns with choices that lead me toward life. If my struggle has wounded my family, give me humility to acknowledge it, seek forgiveness, make amends where possible, and rebuild trust through consistent change. Lord Jesus, do not allow my past failures to convince me that I cannot become free. Amen.
Queen of Martyrs, your heart suffered so much. I beg you, by the merits of the tears you shed in these terrible and sorrowful times, to obtain for me and all the sinners of the world the grace of complete sincerity and repentance. Mother, I place before you my addictions, destructive habits, temptations, repeated failures, family conflicts, broken trust, and every wound these struggles have created in my life. Ask Jesus to free me from everything that keeps me bound, heal the wounds beneath my destructive patterns, and give me courage to seek the help and support I need. When I fall, help me rise; when I am ashamed, lead me to the mercy of Christ; when I am tempted to give up, remind me that freedom is possible through God's grace and my faithful cooperation with it. May Jesus restore what has been damaged, bring peace to my family, and lead me into a life of truth, responsibility, freedom, and holiness. Amen.
Mary, who was conceived without sin and who suffered for us, pray for us.

In the name of The Father, and The Son, and The Holy Spirit. Amen.
