DAY 2: THE SWORD OF BEING FORCED TO LEAVE WHAT YOU LOVE OPENING PRAYER
DAY 2: THE SWORD OF BEING FORCED TO LEAVE WHAT YOU LOVE
Most Sorrowful Mother, on this second day of the novena, I come before you with the pain of situations that have forced me to leave behind things and people I deeply love. Sometimes life changes suddenly, and what once gave me security is no longer there. I bring you the pain of losing a job, leaving a home, separating from loved ones, starting again after failure, or being pushed into an uncertain future. Mother, you know what it means to walk away from everything familiar while carrying fear within your heart. Stay beside me today and teach me to trust God when I do not understand where He is leading me. Amen.
“Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt.”
Matthew 2:13
There are moments when life forces us to leave what we never wanted to leave. A person may lose a job after years of service, leave a relationship that has become painful, relocate because of circumstances, lose financial stability or suddenly find themselves responsible for starting everything again. Sometimes you leave not because you wanted a new beginning, but because remaining where you are is no longer possible. The heart asks, “Why did this happen to me?” and the future suddenly becomes frightening.
Mary knew this kind of uncertainty. She had to take Jesus and leave quickly because Herod wanted to destroy Him. She did not know everything that awaited her in Egypt, but she trusted God's direction. Perhaps today you are entering a season you never planned for. You may not know where the money will come from, how you will rebuild, when things will become stable or whether the future will be better. Like Mary, take the next step with God. “The Lord will guard your going out and your coming in” (Psalm 121:8).
Most Sorrowful Mother, I bring before you the pain of every unexpected departure in my life. You know what it feels like to leave what is familiar and walk into an uncertain future. I bring you every loss that has forced me to begin again, every door that closed without warning and every situation that made me wonder how I would survive. You know the fear that comes when the future is unclear and the heart longs for the security it once knew. Mother, walk with me as you walked with Jesus into Egypt.
At this moment, I place my personal intentions before Jesus through the intercession of Our Lady of Sorrows:
[INSERT YOUR PERSONAL INTENTIONS HERE]
Mother of Sorrows, remember those who have lost their jobs and do not know how they will provide for their families. Remember those whose businesses have failed, those struggling with debts, those who have lost their homes and those who have been forced to leave their places because of circumstances beyond their control. Pray for parents who are worried about feeding their children, young people who cannot find opportunities and families trying to rebuild after difficult seasons. Ask Jesus to open doors that no human being can close and to provide according to His loving providence.
Mother, I also pray for those who have been separated from the people they love. Remember families divided by distance, spouses separated by circumstances, parents unable to be close to their children and people who have had to leave their loved ones in order to survive. When loneliness becomes heavy, remind them that God has not left them. When the journey becomes difficult, obtain courage for them. When they do not know where they are going, help them trust the One who knows the way.
Most Merciful Mother, teach me to surrender the things I cannot keep. If God is asking me to leave something behind, give me the courage to obey without losing hope. If I am being forced into a new season, give me grace to begin again without allowing yesterday to control my tomorrow. Help me remember that losing something does not mean losing God. May Jesus guide every step I take and transform every painful departure into a pathway toward His purpose. Amen.
My God, I offer You this Rosary for Your glory, so that I may honor Your Holy Mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and meditate upon her suffering in union with Jesus Christ. I humbly beg You to give me true repentance for all my sins. Give me wisdom and humility, so that I may receive the graces and indulgences associated with this prayer. Through the intercession of Our Lady of Sorrows, help me to unite my sufferings with the Passion of Christ and to trust You when life takes me through roads I did not choose. Amen.
O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended You, and I detest all my sins because I dread the loss of Heaven and the pains of hell; but most of all because they offend You, my God, You Who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen.
Pray 3 Hail Marys.
Most Merciful Mother, remind us always about the Sorrows of your Son, Jesus.
Luke 2:22–35
Simeon revealed to Mary that a sword would pierce her soul. Her joy in receiving Jesus was joined with the knowledge that suffering would come. She could not prevent the sorrow that awaited her Son, but she trusted God's plan.
Beloved Mother Mary, pray for me when I know that something painful may be coming and I cannot stop it. Pray for the parent worried about a child, the family facing uncertainty and the person afraid of what tomorrow may bring. When fear fills my heart, help me surrender my future to God. Teach me to trust the Lord even when I cannot see what lies ahead. Amen.
Pray 1 Our Father and 7 Hail Marys.
Most Merciful Mother, remind us always about the Sorrows of your Son, Jesus.
Matthew 2:13–15
Mary was forced to leave quickly with Jesus because His life was in danger. She left behind the familiar and entered an uncertain land. Her sorrow speaks to everyone who has experienced an unexpected change that forced them to begin again.
Beloved Mother, you understand the pain of leaving what you love. Pray for those who have lost employment, homes, relationships, financial security or the life they once knew. Pray for those who are beginning again with very little and those who do not know where their next provision will come from. Give them courage to keep moving forward with God. May they discover that even when everything familiar disappears, the Lord remains their refuge and their guide. Amen.
Pray 1 Our Father and 7 Hail Marys.
Most Merciful Mother, remind us always about the Sorrows of your Son, Jesus.
Luke 2:41–52
Mary knew the anguish of searching for someone she loved deeply. For three days, she did not know where Jesus was. Her heart was troubled until she found Him again.
Mother of Sorrows, remember those who feel they have lost someone precious. Pray for parents worried about their children, spouses who feel distant from one another and families separated by conflict. Pray also for those who have lost opportunities, peace, direction or hope. Help us to keep searching for Jesus when life feels confusing. May we never allow what we have lost to make us forget the One who remains with us. Amen.
Pray 1 Our Father and 7 Hail Marys.
Most Merciful Mother, remind us always about the Sorrows of your Son, Jesus.
Luke 23:27–31
Mary met Jesus carrying His Cross. She could not remove His suffering, but she remained close to Him. Her sorrow reminds us of the pain of watching someone we love suffer while feeling powerless to change their situation.
Mother of Sorrows, pray for those watching someone they love go through a painful season. Remember parents worried about their children, spouses watching their partners struggle and families caring for someone facing great difficulties. When I cannot solve another person's problem, teach me that prayer and loving presence still matter. Give me grace to remain faithful instead of becoming overwhelmed by helplessness. Amen.
Pray 1 Our Father and 7 Hail Marys.
Most Merciful Mother, remind us always about the Sorrows of your Son, Jesus.
John 19:25–27
Mary stood beneath the Cross while her Son suffered. She remained when there was nothing she could do except stay with Him. Her sorrow speaks to those who are living through situations that seem impossible to change.
Beloved Mother, pray for me when my life feels like a cross I cannot escape. When I face betrayal, rejection, family conflict, financial pressure or a painful relationship, help me remain close to Jesus. Keep bitterness from taking root in my heart. Give me courage to stand in faith even when I cannot see how the situation will end. Amen.
Pray 1 Our Father and 7 Hail Marys.
Most Merciful Mother, remind us always about the Sorrows of your Son, Jesus.
John 19:38–40
Mary received the lifeless Body of Jesus into her arms. She experienced the terrible reality of losing the One she loved more than anything. Her sorrow speaks to the grief that comes when life gives us a loss we never expected.
Mother of Sorrows, comfort those whose hearts have been broken by loss. Pray for those mourning loved ones, relationships, dreams, opportunities and seasons of life that have ended. Stay close to those who wake up and realize that everything has changed. Help them grieve without losing their hope in God. May Jesus bring consolation to every heart that feels empty today. Amen.
Pray 1 Our Father and 7 Hail Marys.
Most Merciful Mother, remind us always about the Sorrows of your Son, Jesus.
John 19:41–42
Jesus was placed in the tomb, and Mary entered a season of painful silence. It seemed that everything had ended, yet God was still working. Her sorrow speaks to those who are waiting in situations where nothing appears to be changing.
Most Sorrowful Mother, pray for me when my hopes seem buried. When I have prayed and nothing appears to change, help me continue believing. When my financial situation seems impossible, when my family situation seems beyond repair and when opportunities keep passing me by, keep my heart from despair. Teach me to trust God even in the silence. Help me remember that what looks finished to human eyes may still be within God's hands. Amen.
Pray 1 Our Father and 7 Hail Marys.
Most Merciful Mother, remind us always about the Sorrows of your Son, Jesus.
Lord Jesus, today I surrender to You every painful change that has entered my life. I surrender the things I have been forced to leave, the people from whom I have been separated, the security I have lost and the future I am afraid to face. Through the intercession of Our Lady of Sorrows, give me courage to begin again where I must begin again. Provide for me where there is need, guide me where I am uncertain and heal the sorrow caused by everything I have lost. Help me believe that even when I do not understand the road, You are walking with me. “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5). Amen.
Queen of Martyrs, you knew the pain of leaving what was familiar and walking into an uncertain future. By your sorrowful heart, obtain for me the grace to trust God when circumstances change beyond my control. Pray for those who have lost their homes, employment, relationships, security, opportunities and loved ones. May Jesus give us courage to begin again, patience to endure uncertainty and faith to believe that He can bring good even from painful seasons. Most Sorrowful Mother, remain beside us in every journey and lead us always closer to your Son. Amen.
Three times:
Mary, who was conceived without sin and who suffered for us, pray for us.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
