DAY 1: THE SWORD THAT PIERCES THE HEART
DAY 1: THE SWORD THAT PIERCES THE HEART
Most Sorrowful Mother, I come before you today with a heart that has known sorrow, disappointment, fear and wounds that are difficult to explain. I bring before you the struggles I carry in silence, the problems in my family, financial burdens, broken relationships, unanswered prayers and the fears I have about tomorrow. You know what it means to have a sword pierce the heart, because your own heart suffered deeply as you walked with Jesus. Teach me to bring my pain to Him instead of carrying it alone. May this novena draw me closer to Jesus and give me the grace to remain faithful even when my heart is hurting. Amen.
“And a sword will pierce through your own soul also.”
Luke 2:35
There are wounds that nobody can see. Sometimes we smile, work, serve others and continue with life while carrying a heavy sorrow deep within us. It may be the pain of financial struggles, family problems, unemployment, rejection, a troubled marriage, sickness, grief or a prayer that seems to have gone unanswered. Some wounds come from things that happened yesterday, while others come from fears about what tomorrow may bring.
Mary understands the pain of a heart that is pierced. Simeon told her that a sword would pierce her soul, and she continued walking with Jesus even though she knew suffering was ahead. She teaches us that pain does not mean that God has abandoned us. When we cannot change our situation, we can still place it into God's hands. “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted” (Psalm 34:18), and today we bring every wounded place of our hearts before Him.
Most Sorrowful Mother, look upon me today with compassion. You know the sorrow I carry because of situations I cannot change and problems I cannot solve. You know the financial burdens that have become heavy, the doors that have remained closed, the relationships that have wounded me and the family situations that have taken away my peace. You know the tears I hide from others and the questions I sometimes ask God in the silence of my heart. Lead me to Jesus, who alone can carry what has become too heavy for me.
At this moment, I place my personal intentions before Jesus through the intercession of Our Lady of Sorrows:
[INSERT YOUR PERSONAL INTENTIONS HERE]
Mother of Sorrows, I entrust these intentions to you. Pray for the person who is struggling to provide for their family, the one searching for employment, the one drowning in debt and the one wondering where the next provision will come from. Pray for families divided by conflict, spouses wounded by misunderstandings, parents worried about their children and those who feel forgotten by the people they love. Ask Jesus to bring healing where there is pain, provision where there is need and peace where there is turmoil.
Most Merciful Mother, teach me not to lose faith because of what I am going through. When my heart is pierced by disappointment, help me trust. When I am tired of waiting, give me patience. When I cannot see a way forward, remind me that God sees what I cannot see. Help me to unite my suffering with the Cross of Jesus and to believe that He can bring grace even from the things that have caused me pain. May I never allow my sorrow to separate me from God. Amen.
My God, I offer You this Rosary for Your glory, so that I may honor Your Holy Mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and meditate upon her suffering in union with Jesus Christ. I humbly beg You to give me true repentance for all my sins. Give me wisdom and humility, so that I may receive the graces and indulgences associated with this prayer. Through the intercession of Our Lady of Sorrows, help me unite my own sufferings with the Passion of Christ and offer them to You with faith and love. Amen.
O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended You, and I detest all my sins because I dread the loss of Heaven and the pains of hell; but most of all because they offend You, my God, You Who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen.
Pray 3 Hail Mary.
Most Merciful Mother, remind us always about the Sorrows of your Son, Jesus.
Luke 2:22–35
Mary brought Jesus to the Temple, where Simeon revealed that a sword would pierce her soul. She knew that the Child she carried was the Savior, yet she also learned that His mission would involve suffering. Her heart was filled with love for Jesus, but that love also meant sharing in His sorrow. From that moment, the prophecy became part of her journey.
Beloved Mother Mary, you know the pain of receiving news that pierces the heart. Pray for me when I am afraid of what tomorrow may bring and when I worry about the people I love. Pray for the parent who fears for a child, the person worried about their future and the family facing uncertainty. When fear becomes stronger than my faith, lead me back to Jesus. Help me surrender tomorrow into God's hands and trust Him one day at a time. Amen.
Pray 1 Our Father and 7 Hail Mary.
Most Merciful Mother, remind us always about the Sorrows of your Son, Jesus.
Matthew 2:13–15
Mary and Joseph had to leave their home and flee into Egypt to protect the life of Jesus. She entered an uncertain journey without knowing what the future would bring. She had to leave behind what was familiar and trust God's guidance. Her sorrow reminds us of those who are forced to begin again because circumstances have changed their lives.
Beloved Mother, pray for those whose lives have been turned upside down by circumstances beyond their control. Remember those who have lost employment, lost their homes, lost financial security or been forced to start again. Pray for families struggling to survive and those who do not know where their next provision will come from. Give them courage to take the next step without allowing fear to consume them. Teach us to trust that God can guide us even when the road ahead is unfamiliar. Amen.
Pray 1 Our Father and 7 Hail Marys.
Most Merciful Mother, remind us always about the Sorrows of your Son, Jesus.
Luke 2:41–52
Mary experienced the anguish of not knowing where Jesus was. She searched for Him with a troubled heart until she found Him in the Temple. This sorrow speaks to everyone who has experienced the pain of losing something precious. Sometimes we lose relationships, opportunities, peace, trust or connection with someone we deeply love.
Beloved Mother, pray for me when I feel that something precious has been taken from my life. Remember parents who are searching for their children, spouses who feel they have lost one another and families separated by conflict. Remember those who have lost opportunities they hoped would change their lives. Help me seek Jesus even when I feel lost and confused. If something can be restored, ask Jesus to make a way, and if I must let something go, give me the grace to surrender it peacefully. Amen.
Pray 1 Our Father and 7 Hail Mary.
Most Merciful Mother, remind us always about the Sorrows of your Son, Jesus.
Luke 23:27–31
Mary encountered Jesus as He carried His Cross toward Calvary. She could not remove His suffering, but she could remain near Him. Sometimes this is the most painful experience of all: watching someone we love suffer while knowing we cannot take their pain away. Mary teaches us the strength of compassionate presence.
Mother of Sorrows, pray for those who are watching someone they love suffer. Remember the mother worried about her child, the spouse watching their partner struggle and the family caring for someone going through a difficult season. Sometimes we want to solve everything but discover that there are situations beyond our power. Teach us to remain present, loving and prayerful even when we cannot change the situation. Help us place those we love into the hands of Jesus, knowing that He loves them more than we ever could. Amen.
Pray 1 Our Father and 7 Hail Mary.
Most Merciful Mother, remind us always about the Sorrows of your Son, Jesus.
John 19:25–27
Mary stood beneath the Cross while Jesus suffered. Her heart was breaking, yet she remained faithful and did not abandon Him. She teaches us what it means to remain with God when life becomes painful and nothing seems to make sense. There are moments when our own lives feel like Calvary, when everything we trusted appears to be falling apart.
Beloved Mother, teach me to remain faithful when I am standing beneath the cross of my own life. Pray for me when I experience betrayal, rejection, humiliation, family conflict or the pain of a broken relationship. When I feel that everything I worked for is collapsing, keep me close to Jesus. Do not allow anger and bitterness to take control of my heart. Give me the courage to remain faithful until God's purpose becomes clear. Amen.
Pray 1 Our Father and 7 Hail Mary.
Most Merciful Mother, remind us always about the Sorrows of your Son, Jesus.
John 19:38–40
Mary received the lifeless Body of Jesus into her arms after His death. She experienced a grief that words could never adequately express. This sorrow reminds us of the moments when life gives us something we never wanted to receive. It speaks to those who have lost loved ones, relationships, dreams, opportunities or hopes that were deeply precious to them.
Mother of Sorrows, comfort every person whose heart is broken by loss. Remember those mourning the death of a loved one and those grieving a relationship or dream that has ended. Stay close to those who feel empty and do not know how to begin again. Help them to place their grief into the hands of Jesus and to believe that He remains close even in the darkest moments. May His mercy bring comfort where human words cannot reach. Amen.
Pray 1 Our Father and 7 Hail Mary.
Most Merciful Mother, remind us always about the Sorrows of your Son, Jesus.
John 19:41–42
Jesus was placed in the tomb, and Mary entered a painful silence. Everything appeared finished, yet God's plan was not finished. There are moments in our lives when something feels buried beyond recovery. We pray, we wait and we wonder whether anything will ever change.
Most Sorrowful Mother, pray for me when my hopes seem buried. When I have prayed for years and still see no answer, help me continue trusting God. When my finances seem impossible, when my family situation seems beyond repair, when opportunities keep closing and when I feel that my future has become uncertain, keep me from despair. Teach me to wait with faith even when I cannot see what God is doing. Help me remember that silence does not mean absence and that what appears to be an ending may not be the end of God's work. Amen.
Pray 1 Our Father and 7 Hail Mary.
Most Merciful Mother, remind us always about the Sorrows of your Son, Jesus.
Lord Jesus, today I bring You every sword that has pierced my heart. You know the pain I carry, the situation that troubles me and the burden I have struggled to explain to others. Through Our Lady of Sorrows, give me the grace to surrender these wounds to You instead of allowing them to consume my heart. Heal what needs healing, restore what can be restored and give me strength to accept what I cannot change. When I am afraid, remind me that You are with me. When I am tired, carry me, and when I cannot see the way forward, give me enough light to take the next step. Amen.
Queen of Martyrs, your heart was pierced by sorrow as you followed Jesus through the mysteries of His earthly life and Passion. By the merits of your tears and your faithful love, obtain for me the grace of sincere repentance and perseverance in every trial. Pray for all those whose hearts are wounded by poverty, family struggles, rejection, grief, betrayal, loneliness and uncertainty. Teach us to remain close to Jesus beneath every cross and to trust His mercy even when we cannot understand His ways. May our suffering draw us nearer to God and never away from Him. Most Sorrowful Mother, pray for us and lead us always to your Son. Amen.
Three times:
Mary, who was conceived without sin and who suffered for us, pray for us.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
