ABOUT ST. MAXIMILIAN KOLBE

St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe (1894–1941) was a Polish Franciscan friar, priest, missionary, and martyr whose life remains one of the most extraordinary examples of Christian charity and self-sacrificial love in modern history. Born Raymund Kolbe on January 8, 1894, in Zduńska Wola, Poland, he developed a deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary from an early age. As a child, he experienced a vision of the Virgin Mary offering him two crowns: a white crown representing purity and a red crown representing martyrdom. When asked which he would choose, he accepted both, a decision that profoundly shaped the course of his life.

After joining the Conventual Franciscans, he took the religious name Maximilian Maria Kolbe and was ordained a priest in 1918. Filled with zeal for the salvation of souls, he founded the Militia of the Immaculata (Army of the Immaculate) in 1917, a worldwide movement dedicated to leading people to Jesus Christ through total consecration to the Blessed Virgin Mary. He used every available means of evangelization, including newspapers, magazines, and radio, to spread the Gospel and devotion to Our Lady. He established the large Franciscan monastery of Niepokalanów ("City of the Immaculate") near Warsaw, which became one of the world's largest religious publishing centers. He also served as a missionary in Japan, where he founded another monastery and continued proclaiming the Gospel despite many challenges.

During the Second World War, St. Maximilian courageously sheltered thousands of refugees, including many Jews, from Nazi persecution. In 1941, he was arrested by the German authorities and imprisoned in the Auschwitz concentration camp. After a prisoner escaped, the camp commander selected ten men to die by starvation in retaliation. When one of the condemned prisoners cried out for his wife and children, Fr. Maximilian voluntarily stepped forward and offered to take his place. His request was accepted, and he spent two weeks in the starvation bunker encouraging the other prisoners through prayer, hymns, and unwavering faith. On August 14, 1941, after surviving the starvation ordeal, he was killed by a lethal injection. His heroic sacrifice became one of the greatest testimonies of Christ's command: "Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends" (John 15:13).

St. Maximilian Kolbe was beatified by Pope St. Paul VI in 1971 and canonized by Pope St. John Paul II on October 10, 1982, who declared him a "Martyr of Charity." Today he is honored as the Patron Saint of prisoners, journalists, radio operators, families, political prisoners, the pro-life movement, and those struggling with addiction. His life teaches us that authentic love always involves self-sacrifice and that total trust in Jesus through the Immaculate Virgin Mary leads to heroic holiness.
