DAY 36: THE KNOT OF UNFORGIVENESS AND BITTERNESS
DAY 36: THE KNOT OF UNFORGIVENESS AND BITTERNESS
For the grace to surrender to Mary, Undoer of Knots, every wound that has produced unforgiveness, resentment, anger, and bitterness within my heart. May Jesus heal the memories that still hurt, soften the places that have become hardened, and give me the courage to forgive those who have wounded me, betrayed me, rejected me, humiliated me, or caused me deep pain.
May the Lord also give me wisdom to forgive without returning to situations that are harmful, and grace to understand that forgiveness does not mean denying what happened. Through Mary's intercession, may Christ free my heart from the chains of resentment and teach me to desire healing rather than revenge.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Mercy and Refuge of Sinners, today I come before Jesus carrying wounds that I have struggled to release. I bring the names, memories, words, betrayals, disappointments, and painful experiences that still stir anger within me. Some wounds happened long ago, yet they still feel present whenever I remember what happened. I have tried to move forward, but something within me keeps returning to the pain. Mother, take this wounded heart before your Son and ask Him to touch what I cannot heal by myself. May His Word guide me: “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you” (Ephesians 4:32).
Mary, Undoer of Knots, teach me the difference between forgiveness and pretending that I was never hurt. Help me surrender the desire for revenge without denying the seriousness of what happened. Where reconciliation is possible and safe, guide me toward it; where distance is necessary, help me maintain it without hatred. Give me grace to forgive even when my emotions have not yet caught up with my decision. May Jesus cleanse my heart from bitterness and teach me to place justice in God's hands. Amen.
“Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice.”
Ephesians 4:31
Unforgiveness can become a hidden knot within the heart. The person who wounded me may have moved on, but I may still be carrying the pain of what happened. I may replay conversations, remember betrayal, imagine what I should have said, or wish that the person could somehow experience the pain they caused me. Sometimes I believe that holding onto resentment protects me from being hurt again. Yet slowly, the wound can begin to occupy a place within me that belongs to peace. I can become imprisoned by an event that has already happened because I continue carrying it into every new day.
Jesus does not ask me to call evil good or to pretend that injustice never happened. Forgiveness is not the approval of wrongdoing, nor does it always require restoring the same relationship. There are situations where boundaries are necessary, where trust must be rebuilt slowly, and where reconciliation may not be possible. But Christ calls me to release vengeance into the hands of God. When I forgive, I begin allowing God to become the judge of the wound instead of allowing the wound to become the judge of my entire life.
Today, through Mary, Undoer of Knots, I bring before Jesus the person I have struggled to forgive and the pain I have struggled to release. Perhaps I am not yet able to say that everything is healed, but I can begin with a sincere prayer: Jesus, I want to forgive; please give me the grace to forgive. May the Lord gradually loosen the knot of bitterness, heal the memory without erasing the lesson, and restore the peace that resentment has taken from me. May I become free not because what happened was insignificant, but because Christ's mercy is greater than the wound.
Mary, Undoer of Knots, loving Mother, I place before you every wound that has produced unforgiveness within me. I bring before Jesus the person who hurt me, the words that wounded me, the betrayal that broke my trust, and the injustice that I still struggle to understand. You know how deeply these experiences have affected me. You know the anger I hide, the memories that return unexpectedly, and the resentment that I sometimes cannot explain. Take this wounded heart to Jesus and ask Him to begin a healing that I cannot accomplish through my own strength.
Mother, untie the knot of bitterness that has become attached to my memories. Where anger has become permanent, ask Jesus to bring peace. Where resentment has become familiar, bring His mercy. Where I secretly desire revenge, help me surrender justice into God's hands. Teach me that forgiving someone does not mean denying the wrong they committed or placing myself again in an unsafe situation. Give me wisdom to establish necessary boundaries while keeping hatred from taking possession of my heart.
Mother Mary, I now place before you my particular intention today. (Mention your intention silently.) I bring before Jesus the person, situation, or wound that I find most difficult to forgive. Perhaps it is a family member, friend, former partner, colleague, or someone whose actions changed my life painfully. I ask Jesus to touch this wound at its deepest point. May He give me the grace to forgive according to His will, even if the healing takes time. May His Word become my prayer: “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34).
Mary, Undoer of Knots, help me stop allowing another person's wrongdoing to determine the condition of my heart. Ask Jesus to remove the poison of resentment while preserving the wisdom I have gained from what happened. If I need to apologize for my own part, give me humility. If I need to set a boundary, give me courage. If reconciliation is possible, guide the process with wisdom. If reconciliation is not possible, help me forgive without reopening the wound. May Christ make my heart free enough to love again without being controlled by the pain of yesterday. Amen.
This Chaplet is prayed today for every knot created by unforgiveness, resentment, anger, and bitterness. I surrender the wounds I continue to carry, the people whose actions still hurt me, the memories that disturb my peace, and the desire to see those who wounded me suffer. I ask Jesus to teach me true forgiveness without denying the reality of what happened.
I now pray this Chaplet especially for the person or situation that I have found most difficult to forgive.
Before beginning the Chaplet, I quietly place before God the name, wound, betrayal, injustice, or painful memory that I desire to surrender to His mercy.
Mary, Undoer of Knots, take my wounded heart before Jesus and obtain for me the grace to forgive without hatred and to seek healing without denying the truth.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Mother Mary, Undoer of Knots, I bring before Jesus the resentment that has remained within my heart. I surrender the memories that still cause pain and the anger that rises whenever I remember what happened. May Christ give me the grace to forgive from the heart while giving me wisdom to maintain whatever boundaries are necessary. Amen.
O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you.
1. Mother Mary, Undoer of Knots, obtain healing for the wounds that still make forgiveness difficult. (One Hail Mary.)
2. Mother Mary, Undoer of Knots, obtain grace for me to release resentment and vengeance. (One Hail Mary.)
3. Mother Mary, Undoer of Knots, obtain wisdom for me to forgive while maintaining healthy boundaries. (One Hail Mary.)
Mary, Mother of Mercy, protect me from the temptation to allow anger to control my thoughts and decisions. When I am tempted to retaliate, speak harshly, expose another person's faults, or deliberately cause pain because I was hurt, obtain for me self-control. Help me remember that revenge cannot heal a wounded heart. May Scripture guide me: “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12:21).
Virgin Mary, Mother of Fair Love, obtain for me freedom from the desire to repay hurt with hurt.
Our Father...
Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me. (10 times.)
One Hail Mary and One Glory Be.
Mother Mary, deliver me from the sin of nurturing hatred and resentment within my heart. When I repeatedly revisit another person's wrongdoing simply to keep my anger alive, help me surrender that memory to Jesus. Teach me to recognize where bitterness has begun changing the way I speak, think, and treat others. May Scripture teach me: “Let all that you do be done in love” (1 Corinthians 16:14).
Virgin Mary, Mother of Fair Love, obtain for me a heart that chooses love even while healing from deep wounds.
Our Father...
Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me. (10 times.)
One Hail Mary and One Glory Be.
Mother Mary, come to my aid when the pain of betrayal and injustice becomes overwhelming. There are wounds I cannot explain and memories that still disturb my peace. Bring my distress before Jesus and ask Him to heal the places where I feel abandoned, humiliated, rejected, or betrayed. May His Word strengthen me: “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and saves the crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18).
Virgin Mary, Mother of Fair Love, obtain consolation for the wounded places in my heart that still cry for healing.
Our Father...
Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me. (10 times.)
One Hail Mary and One Glory Be.
Mother Mary, comfort me when I remember what happened and feel the pain all over again. Help me understand that healing can be gradual and that I do not need to pretend that everything is already fine. Bring my memories before Jesus and ask Him to transform the sorrow within them. May His Word console me: “He heals the brokenhearted, and binds up their wounds” (Psalm 147:3).
Virgin Mary, Mother of Fair Love, obtain healing for every painful memory that continues to disturb my peace.
Our Father...
Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me. (10 times.)
One Hail Mary and One Glory Be.
Mother Mary, encourage me when I fear that forgiving someone means becoming vulnerable to the same hurt again. Teach me that forgiveness and reconciliation are not always identical. Give me wisdom to forgive without abandoning necessary boundaries, and courage to protect myself without allowing hatred to remain in my heart. May Scripture remind me: “The wise are cautious and turn away from evil” (Proverbs 14:16).
Virgin Mary, Mother of Fair Love, obtain discernment for me to know when to reconcile, when to wait, and when a healthy boundary is necessary.
Our Father...
Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me. (10 times.)
One Hail Mary and One Glory Be.
Mother Mary, bring relief to the emotional exhaustion caused by carrying resentment for too long. Sometimes bitterness affects my peace, my relationships, my prayer, and even the way I see myself. Ask Jesus to cleanse my heart from the poison of hatred and restore within me the freedom to live without constantly returning to yesterday's wound. May Scripture give me hope: “A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh” (Proverbs 14:30).
Virgin Mary, Mother of Fair Love, obtain inner peace for me where unforgiveness has exhausted my heart.
Our Father...
Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me. (10 times.)
One Hail Mary and One Glory Be.
Mother Mary, strengthen me when I know I should forgive but my heart still struggles with the pain. I surrender my inability to heal myself and ask Jesus to do within me what I cannot accomplish alone. Give me the grace to make the decision to forgive again and again until the wound no longer controls me. May Scripture strengthen me: “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?” (Psalm 27:1).
Virgin Mary, Mother of Fair Love, obtain for me the strength to release this wound into Christ's hands and continue walking toward healing.
Our Father...
Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me. (10 times.)
One Hail Mary and One Glory Be.
Mary, Undoer of Knots, I thank you for helping me bring my wounded heart before Jesus. I surrender the bitterness I have carried, the anger I have protected, and the memories I have struggled to release. I do not want another person's wrongdoing to become a permanent prison around my heart. Ask Jesus to give me the grace to forgive sincerely while helping me preserve the wisdom and boundaries necessary for my wellbeing.
Mother Mary, teach me to place justice into God's hands rather than seeking revenge for myself. May Christ heal what has been wounded, soften what has become hardened, and restore the peace that resentment has taken from me. Where reconciliation is possible, guide me with wisdom; where distance is necessary, keep my heart free from hatred. May the mercy I receive from Christ become the mercy I learn to extend to others. Amen.
O Mary, Undoer of Knots, untie every knot of unforgiveness and bitterness.
O Mary, Undoer of Knots, obtain healing for every heart wounded by betrayal and injustice.
O Mary, Undoer of Knots, lead us to the merciful Heart of Jesus. Amen.
Mary, Undoer of Knots, Mother of Mercy, I bring before you the wound that has made forgiveness difficult for me. I bring the person who hurt me and the memory that still causes pain. I bring the words I cannot forget, the betrayal I cannot understand, and the injustice I still carry within my heart. I ask you to take this wound before Jesus and ask Him to heal what I cannot heal by myself. May His mercy reach the deepest place of my heart and begin setting me free.
Mother Mary, I now place before you my particular intention today. (Mention your intention silently.) I surrender to Jesus the person I struggle to forgive and the circumstances surrounding this wound. I surrender my anger, my questions, my disappointment, and even my desire for the other person to suffer because of what they did to me. Give me grace to leave justice in God's hands and to seek healing rather than revenge. Where I need to forgive, give me strength; where I need to establish boundaries, give me wisdom; where reconciliation is possible, guide me with peace.
Mary, Undoer of Knots, help me become free from the past without becoming careless about the lessons it taught me. May I forgive without forgetting wisdom, love without abandoning discernment, and move forward without carrying hatred into every new relationship. Ask Jesus to restore the peace that bitterness has stolen from me. May His mercy become greater within me than the wound I have received, and may my heart once again become a place where love, peace, and hope can live. Amen.
Jesus, through the maternal intercession of Mary, I surrender to You every person who has wounded me. I surrender the betrayal, rejection, humiliation, abandonment, disappointment, and injustice that I have carried within my heart. I surrender my desire to understand everything and my desire to see justice happen according to my own timing. Take these wounds into Your hands and teach me to forgive as an act of faith, even when the emotions of forgiveness take time to grow.
Mary, my Mother, I surrender the bitterness that has remained in my heart. I surrender the memories that still disturb my peace and the anger that rises whenever I remember what happened. Help me trust Jesus with what I cannot resolve. May He heal me without making me deny the truth, protect me without making me hateful, and lead me forward without allowing yesterday's wound to control tomorrow. I surrender this knot completely into His merciful hands. Amen.
Lord Jesus, I thank You for receiving the wound I have carried for so long. I may not feel completely free today, but I choose to begin the journey of forgiveness with You. Give me the grace to release resentment little by little, to stop feeding hatred within my heart, and to trust Your justice more than my desire for revenge.
Mary, Undoer of Knots, remain beside me as Christ heals this wound. May I learn to forgive without denying the truth, establish boundaries without hatred, and move forward without carrying bitterness into my future. May the mercy of Jesus transform my wounded heart into a heart capable of loving again. Amen.
Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me.
Mary, Mother of Mercy, pray for me.
Mary, Refuge of Sinners, pray for me.
Mary, Comforter of the Afflicted, pray for me.
Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place my trust in You.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
